Throughout a large portion of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive in a realm of memories forged from the recollections of the villain Henry. Their mission for freedom in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to witness again a defining event from Henry's youth—a moment that could contain the key to defeating him once and for all.

The Discovery in the Tunnel

When she finds Max in the world known as Camazotz, Holly discovers she is hiding out in a chamber that Henry strangely fears. An accidental discovery a viewing device pilfered from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. When she lines up her view through the cap, she and Max tumble into a subterranean passage.

In this place, they observe a child version of Henry come across an man who is hurt and scared. Attempting assistance, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly wonders aloud. It was a factor, but the event wasn't just a simple act of survival.

Like many elements this season, the significance of the encounter originates in the theatrical production The First Shadow.

The Philadelphia Experiment and A Spy's Mission

The play reveals the legendary naval test, which allegedly sent a vessel into a dimension later called the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the sole survivor was the captain, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an altered blood type.

The captain's son, the future Dr. Brenner, sought to replicate this dimensional breach in Nevada. One of his scientists stole research materials to sell to the Communist spies, who were eager to begin their version of the tests. That traitor in the mine shaft is that employee.

So, What's in the Case?

Given what is known about Brenner's work, the briefcase most likely held some of the unique blood type. At that moment, Henry is wounded and bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon contact with the blood, causing the awakening of his powers—powers he would genetically impart to the test subjects in Hawkins Lab.

A second theory, the case could have held strange particles that was destined to travel to the Hawkins lab, where it maintains the stability of the parallel world. The stage play explains that the boy somehow wound up in the Abyss, coming back hours later as a different person. Throughout the play, he fights the control of a sinister presence, reminiscent of how Will was influenced by the entity in season 2.

The Power of Fear

Henry's enduring terror linked to that memory highlights how deeply scarring the incident was for him. Even as he controls the collective consciousness and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche lingers. Fear is his tool, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between Vecna and Will, who has confronted his greatest terrors to fortify himself.

His confrontation has taken a weapon from Vecna. More importantly, Will now understands what his enemy truly fears, potentially giving him a key upper hand in the endgame conflict that awaits.
