Vince Gilligan Discloses He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... Currently.
Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that the Apple TV+ show would turn into a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
As the debut season of the popular sci-fi show wrapping up—and a second season greenlit and underway—the writers' room recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.
About the Incredible Fan Response
One could easily to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions about Pluribus. The creator is striving to avoid both.
“It's like being force fed hot fudge sundaes and being in a state of bliss,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's by design. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”
Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by what people are saying.”
“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in.
The Central Mystery: Has the showrunner Know the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Considering the creative staff aren’t being guided by fan response, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… in a way.
“There are some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to discard a solid concept for a better idea. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
On the other hand, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.
“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Of course, one could always use the classics?
“I want Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
