The White Sox Sign Star Hitter Munetaka Murakami on an Major Two-Year Deal.
In a significant move for their retooling roster, the American League club have welcomed infielder Munetaka Murakami, completing a $34 million contract bringing in the power-hitting player.
Contract Details and Added Benefits
The deal features a seven-figure signing bonus, payable within 30 days, in addition to salaries of $16 million for the next season and $17 million for the 2027 year.
Additionally, Murakami's 2027 salary is subject to escalators based on accolade achievements in 2026:
- A seven-figure bonus for being named the MVP award.
- Half a million dollars for finishing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
- A quarter-million for ranking in the top ten.
- An identical bonus for winning the Rookie of the Year honor.
His deal provides that he will not be optioned to the minor leagues without his approval and makes him a unrestricted player at the termination of the contract. Additional perks include a club-supplied interpreter and travel costs between the U.S. and Japan.
Posting Fee and Historical Context
As part of the acquisition, Chicago is obligated to provide a posting fee of roughly $6.58 million to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's Central League. The Yakult organization are also entitled to a supplemental fee of any triggered incentive payments.
Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth Japanese-born to suit up for the Chicago franchise, joining reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu once managed Murakami back in Japan.
On-Field Accomplishments
Murakami, a lefty bat who will turn 26 on February 2nd, joins a young group of offensive players in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are coming off a 60-102 season, finishing at the bottom in the American League Central but showing a significant improvement from the year before campaign.
A two-time Central League MVP honors in '21 and '22, Murakami is famous for a historic 2022 season where he hit 56 homers, surpassing the all-time record for a player in Japan formerly held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the youngest player ever to achieve Japan's prestigious Triple Crown.
His 2023 season was limited to a partial schedule due to an side strain. Despite recording 64 Ks, he hit .273 with 22 HRs and 47 runs batted in.
Over his career tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has posted a .270 career batting average with 246 home runs, 647 runs batted in, and 977 Ks in 892 games. Initially playing mainly at first base, he has since transitioned to third base.
International Pedigree
Murakami's clutch hitting were on full display during the 2023 WBC. In the semi-final against Mexico, he hit a victory-sealing double that brought home teammates for a come-from-behind one-run win. The following day in the final against the United States, he slugged a equalizing shot in the second inning, setting the stage for Japan's eventual championship win.
