Spurs Manager Thomas Frank Calls Goalkeeper Booers 'Not Genuine Fans'
The Cottagers Begin Powerfully to Defeat Spurs and Increase Tension on the Manager
Spurs fans who booed goalkeeper Vicario were informed afterwards "they cannot be real Spurs fans" by manager Thomas Frank.
Tottenham conceded a pair of scores in the first six minutes to fall 2-1 to their opponents, registering their 10th Premier League home loss of the year.
But the main topic of discussion was Fulham's second score when the keeper lost the ball well beyond his box.
The goalkeeper came out to deal with a high pass and carried the ball near the sideline.
However, instead of booting it into touch, the Italy international spun and tried to clear, but slipped as the ball glanced off Wilson and was collected by Josh King.
King passed the ball off to Wales midfield player Wilson, who bent a shot into the net from the sideline recorded at 36.6 metres.
Moments afterwards when the ball went to the keeper once more, some Tottenham supporters booed him.
The team were jeered off at half-time, with the club 2-0 behind, and once more at full-time.
One of those booing sessions truly angered Frank.
"I heard a few of our supporters reportedly jeered the situation and jeered following, which, in my view is completely unacceptable," the Dane stated about the supporters' response to his goalkeeper.
"[They] cannot be true Tottenham fans that act that way. Alright booing following the game, no problem, but when we are in play, we are supporting one another, we are behind one another moving ahead."
Tete had given Fulham a fourth-minute advantage before Wilson's strike – with Kudus scoring for Spurs in an better second period performance.
Ex- Premier League goalkeeper Joe Hart stated that the next goal was "completely avoidable".
"I do understand the fans' frustration," Hart continued. "I am aware the role Vicario is playing. He is a great squad member, he is a true leader in the locker room but ultimately you are going to be judged by your decisions.
"The keeper was heavily implicated in what turned out to be the decisive score."
'It is Part of Football, I Can Handle It'
Frank Stood Up For His Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario After the Match
Italy national team Vicario is in his 3rd season with Tottenham.
The 29-year-old said following the match that he had to take the feedback.
"That score was a error of my own, I take responsibility for it," he commented.
"The intent was to kick the ball long and I just hit the ball in a bad manner. It was an more difficult mountain to climb."
He stated being booed "comes with the game".
"I'm a big man, how can I respond?" he added. "The team can't be affected by the circumstances in the crowd. The fans have the entitlement to do as they see fit.
"It is on the team to stay more calm, to concentrate on our own performance. The team is missing in calmness and calmness to reverse results. Today is a poor defeat and it is tough to accept."
'It Shocked Me No One Went Back to the Goal Line'
In spite of Vicario's mistake, it was far from an easy goal for Wilson to score.
In fact it was the second most distant top division goal of the campaign – following Tyler Adams' 43.3 yard strike for Bournemouth against Sunderland, which incidentally too occurred on the same day.
Wilson stated he was "somewhat surprised" that he still had an open net to aim for.
Ten moments elapsed between the keeper coming out of his box and Wilson striking – which was 5 moments following the clearance.
"It seemed to me like the goalkeeper was out of the area for ages," Wilson remarked.
"I was surprised not one of the defenders went back to the goal line. When none of them defended the net, my interest sparked somewhat.
"Udogie fell as well, which gave me a little extra time. After that it was all about trying to make the correct connection and get it on target. I felt a positive sense, as soon as it left my foot, that it was heading in."
'During in a Bad Spell, Everything Seems to Work Against You'
Jeering Whilst We Are Still Playing Is Completely Unjustifiable - Frank
While Vicario's error dominated headlines, this was an all-round bad day for Spurs to extend their home struggles.
This was their 10th home loss of the year in the Premier League, a joint club record matching 1994 and two thousand and three.
The side still have home games against the manager's former club the Bees and champions the Reds to come prior to the end of the year.
Only one of those victories have come since the manager replaced his predecessor in the off-season.
"When you're behind 2-0 following six minutes, there is a huge challenge to climb," said Frank.
"During in a poor run, all aspects seems to go against you as well – the opening was a deflected attempt, the next is a mistake from the keeper.
"This result leaves us in a position where we have lost another game. Every game has a unique story, today we lost in the early stages.
"We just need to keep working. The second half was significantly improved and hopefully something we can use to learn."
Tottenham have lost 4 consecutive home London derbies for the first time in the top division.
Furthermore they are recording nine point five attempts and three point two shots on target per game in the Premier League – their poorest averages on record in a one season (dating back to the 2003-04 season).
Former Fulham midfielder Danny Murphy commented that Frank has to endure the criticism.
"He's got accept the criticism," Murphy remarked. "He has taken a prestigious role at a huge football club with enormous anticipation. There is scrutiny and responsibility that comes with that.
"The performances at their stadium have been disappointing and they have to get better {quickly|
