Rob Edwards and O'Neil represent the initial candidates under consideration to succeed the former manager as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Pereira was dismissed on the weekend following the team's ten-game without a victory start to the top-flight campaign.
And Edwards and O'Neil - each of whom have historic links to the club - are part of the names to be evaluated by the Wolves ownership.
The manager is presently at another club, which would pose a potential hurdle to his appointment at Wolves' stadium.
Nevertheless the former Luton Town manager - who made more than 100 of appearances for the club during his playing career - is said to be a leading candidate for the position.
The mid-career manager is reportedly enjoys backing from the club board as they start the search of appointing a fresh head coach.
O'Neil is also emerging as a surprise contender, although he would be a shock choice considering he was released by the club in the previous winter.
The ex- West Ham midfielder is currently unemployed which means the club would not be required to provide any compensation.
