A renowned South African media personality and entertainer has been shot dead in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a country grappling with persistent crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was gunned down in the city centre on a Tuesday afternoon.

Officials stated the 40-year-old presenter was accosted by three individuals, one of whom began shooting at him before escaping on foot.

The reason behind the attack remains unclear and no suspects have been apprehended have taken place, police said.

Authorities said that Stock was attacked as he was leaving a premises close to the Carlton Centre.

He had spent several hours at the building managing the implementation of security systems, which had been illegally inhabited by squatters, as per local media.

"The report indicates the victim was confronted by three unknown suspects after parking his vehicle, and they opened fire at him before fleeing the scene on foot," authorities stated.

CCTV footage reportedly depicted a man with dreadlocks and dressed in what resembled a protective services outfit firing shots on Stock before making his escape.

The DJ sought to escape after he was shot but fell down across the street.

Police added that Stock had an gun that was not fired and it was not a robbery during the incident.

Police have appealed anyone who saw the event who may have witnessed the attack to assist with the investigation.

"We know they walked a long distance after the attack, and officers have been following their trail to find their whereabouts," stated a police chief.

His sister, Nicole Stock, stated the loved ones are reeling to come to terms with the loss.

"I am in shock. I don't have words," were her words.
"It is clear he was a champion for numerous individuals. He addressed issues courageously about topics not many people were ready to discuss. This is a profound tragedy."

She requested the community to refrain from sharing graphic images from the incident, explaining this was an extremely painful time, above all for Stock's three sons.
