Antony Price, Renowned for Designing for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential style architect responsible for many legendary styles associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.
Price was best known for his defined forms and performative fashion, such as the pastel suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
Price's death comes just weeks after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with looks from model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in designing sculptural silhouettes established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the UK's fashion authority.
During the nineties, he commenced designing outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included various looks for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.
Following a profession lasting half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.
